Additional learning support
At Smithfield West Public School, we are committed to ensuring every student is ready to learn and succeed. We provide support for students with disabilities and additional learning needs, enabling them to fully participate in all aspects of school life.
Formal diagnosis is not required for your child to receive support within a mainstream classroom. Support can begin at any stage during your child’s school journey, tailored to meet their unique needs.
Support that fits your child's needs
Supporting Every Student to Succeed
At Smithfield West Public School, we understand that some students may need extra support to build confidence and achieve their best. We work closely with families to develop tailored support plans and make adjustments that meet each child’s unique needs.
Our additional learning support includes:
- Collaboration between teachers, support staff, families, and students where appropriate
- Specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- Tailored programs for high potential and gifted students to meet advanced learning needs
- Small group tutoring focused on targeted literacy and numeracy support
- Regular check-ins to review and update support plans
Classroom adjustments may include:
- Accessible learning environments
- Use of assistive technology
- Adapted teaching resources
- Extra guidance, simplified content, or different lesson focuses
Assessment adjustments may include:
- Extended time for tasks
- Use of simpler language
- Scheduled breaks during activities
- Alternative ways to complete tasks, such as oral presentations
We identify when students need support by:
- Observing changes in learning or behaviour
- Reviewing assessment results and progress
- Responding to concerns raised by parents or carers
All adjustments and support plans are developed in partnership with parents and carers, regularly reviewed, and adapted as needed.
If you believe your child may benefit from additional support, please contact us to discuss how we can assist.
